No rain, sleet or snow! What's happening: The Polk County Board of Education will hold its regular monthly meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Stearns Education Center board room. Tire Columbus Merchants Association meets tonight at 7 at McDonald's in Columbus. Auditions for Tryon Little Theater’s fall production of Kiss Me Kate will be held Friday evening and Saturday afternoon at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. Saluda's annual Coon Dog Day celebration will be Satur day. The day begins with a road race at 7:15 a.m. and ends with a street dance from 8 p.m. to midnight. The parade takes place at 11 a.m. The Landrum Town Council meets July 14th at 7:30 p.m. Area newcomers will meet at Hannon Field on Friday, July 17 at 5 p.m. for a potluck sup per. N.C. 28782 Polk County Little League Picks All-Stars The 1992 Polk County Little League All-Star team was cho sen by the players and coaches and is now practicing for their first game. Chosen for the team were: Giants Al Corcoran and Daniel Schulman and Pirates Jeremy Mills and Clay Osborne; Yankees Stephan Thomas, Ricky Green, Kyle Stokes and Adrian Sperka; Dodgers Nicholas Johnson and Chris Rich; Cardinals Jacob Graves, Andy Arledge, Elijah Home and Matt Griffin. Alternates are Reds Gerry Pobanz and Ryan Wilson. Car dinal manager Randy Hudson will manage the team, Wesley Jolley is the coach. The All-Starts meet Forest City on Monday, July 13 at 8 p.m. in Rutherfordton. -Community Reporter Broom Sales A Success The Columbus Lions Club's sale of brooms at the Revco Plaza and at the Columbus 4th Celebration went great. The Club asks the people of the community to accept its sincere thanks and gratitude for the generous support. An important part of this program is lunch and NationsBank has made a $300 contribution to support this activity. Must Rehash Crime in Marr Trial District Attorney Alan Leon ard must prove all over again in Polk County Superior Court this week that a crime was com mitted in order to link Daniel Man to charges of accessory before the fact stemming from the 1990 murder of Paul Acker. Tuesday Leonard called to the stand four State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) agents who gave testimony that tied Marr's nephew, Jimmy Jaynes, and co-defendant Shane Smith to the murder scene that night in October 1990. Even though Jaynes has already been con victed of murdering Acker, Leonard must prove to this jury that a crime was in fact com mitted before he can Jink Marr to the case. Smith is free on bond pending his trial on charges of murder, arson and first degree burglary. Just after the lunch break Tuesday, Defense Attorney Mark Powell made a motion that he be supplied with the original handwritten notes taken by former SBI agent Tom Pruitt when he questioned Shane Smith after his arrest. Later in the afternoon Ruby Smith was called to the stand and testified that after the arrest of her son Shane Smith, she received a phone call from Susie Marr, Jaynes' aunt and Daniel Marr's wife. Ms. Marr advised Ruby Smith to look under her living room couch for a .22 calibre rifle used (Continued On Back Page)
